Auditions The Greenwich Village Singers are always eager to welcome singers who want to become part of our tradition of high-quality choral music in the Village. In a medium-sized choral group every voice really makes a difference. GVS is known for its beautiful timbre, high standards of musicianship, and innovative programming. Listen
Our upcoming concerts are scheduled for May 16th and December 19th, 2008. Auditions will be held in August for the 2008/2009 concert season. We are interested in singers with good sight-reading skills and some previous choral experience, but please feel free to contact us if you’re not sure of your level. Our auditions are brief and relatively informal. You are also welcome to join us for a rehearsal or two beforehand where you can meet our Music Director, Mark Mangini. Contact us by calling (718) 857 1981 to arrange to come to a rehearsal or to sign up for an audition. Alternatively, send an e-mail to info@gvsingers.org and we’ll get back to you. Rehearsals Our season typically runs from early September through late May. Our rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings at St. John's Episcopal Church, 224 Waverly Place at 11th St. (one block west of 7th Avenue) in Manhattan, with the addition of one Saturday “marathon” rehearsal per season, to be announced. Regular rehearsals run from 7:30 pm until 9:45 pm. We ask for a commitment from our singers to regular attendance at rehearsals.
Performances We perform at least two concerts each season, usually in December and May, and most often on Friday evenings. A third concert or special performance event is often scheduled for March. We generally have two dress rehearsals per concert, usually on Monday and Wednesday evening of concert week. Most concerts are performed only once, although on occasion, we expand some of our concerts to two performances. Concerts are held at various Manhattan venues, including St. Joseph's Church and Grace Church (both in the Village), Saint Peter's Church in the Citicorp Center, FIT, Hunter College, Calvary Episcopal, and St. George's. Members are strongly encouraged to sell tickets to our concerts, but are not required to sell any specific number of tickets. Concert
Dress Concert dress for women is a floor-length black skirt, a long-sleeved black blouse and a pearl necklace; concert dress for men is black tie. Dues Dues for the 2007/8 season are $150, with a reduced rate of $125 for singers under 25 or over 65. Scholarships can be made available at the discretion of the Board in cases of financial hardship. Dues are payable in two stages — half in September each year and half in January of the following year. We order all music in bulk and make copies of scores available to our members at cost. Members are expected to buy the music for each concert from the chorus. |
