Franz Liszt, the flamboyant pianist who gave dazzling solo performances during the start of his career, underwent a major personal transformation when he took holy orders and lived out the last part of his life as an abbot in Rome. The Missa Choralis dates from this period in his life, and is the most intimate of his sacred works. Johannes Brahms’s Zigeunerlieder (Gypsy Songs) will appeal to listeners who know his better-known Liebeslieder Waltzes. Many of the songs have the flavor of his piano pieces, The Hungarian Dances.
